What is stigma?

Stigma is commonly defined as the use of stereotypes and labels when defining someone. Stigma is Greek for "sign" and it has come to refer to a characteristic or set of characteristics that bring shame to an individual or group who bear this "sign" or stereotyped label. The stigma surrounding these misunderstandings can limit opportunities, it can stand in the way of a new job, it can increase feelings of loneliness, and it can cause many other unfortunate outcomes. According to the Surgeon General, the stigma associated with mental illness "is manifested by bias, distrust, stereotyping, fear, embarrassment, anger, and avoidance.

Boulder Anti-Stigma Project

  • The Boulder anti-stigma campaign is a pilot project of the World Psychiatric Association global program to reduce the stigma and discrimination due to schizophrenia.

  • MHCBC is associated with The World Psychiatric Association Program to Fight Stigma due to Schizophrenia. This is an international effort to increase awareness about the nature of schizophrenia and its treatment, improve public attitudes, and generate action to eliminate stigma, discrimination and prejudice. • A competition for high school students to develop and submit anti-stigma media materials was held in Boulder Valley high schools in the spring semester of 2001, 2002, and 2003. The consumer speakers’ bureau makes presentations to art classes to heighten the interest and knowledge of the students. Cash prizes are awarded to winning entrants at a public reception. The 2003 competition reception and art show were held at the Dairy Center Gallery on April 14, 7 p.m.
